Alejandro Romero began his art studies in 1967 at the Academy of San Carlos of the National School of Fine Arts, and has also studied at the Art School of Vincennes in Paris, The Artists' Collective in Taos, New Mexico, and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He studied mural art at the workshops of Juan O'Gorman and David Alfaro Siqueiros and also has studied with Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo and José Clemente Orozco. Romero has exhibited in group and individual shows throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Born in Villa Hermosa, Tabasco (Mexico) in 1948, Romero has lived in Chicago since 1976. Over the years he has painted images for more than 75 posters for major cultural events in Chicago including the Chicago Jazz and Blues Festivals, the Latino Film Festival, the Pilsen Neighbors' Fiesta del Sol, and other Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. As a Muralist Romero's works have left their mark at Chicago State University, the Chicago Federation of Labor, the Ada McKinley Center, the Central State Joint Board, the Amtrak station in Joliet, and at O'Hare International Airport. The "I've Known Rivers" mural, created with students from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs Gallery 37 program, can be seen at O'Hare in the Pedestrian Tunnel connecting the terminals to the parking garages and CTA station. "Alejandro Romero is reputed to be the best known and most celebrated Latino artist in Illinois. The pieces in this exhibit illustrate multi-dimensional humans from throughout history along with symbols portraying myths and legends--all juxtaposed in a perfect balance of color, which Romero has accurately termed The Poetics of Life." --Ariel Zapata, Founder and President, World Art ExpressionsWorld Art Expressions (WAE) is a non-profit organization established in Chicago in 1997 to promote world visual and performing arts in Illinois. WAE has coordinated a variety of arts shows and concerts throughout Chicago, including the PeaceArt/PeaceMusic Festival and the State of Illinois' 2000 Hispanic Heritage Month poster design. |
