5th Annual African-American Pioneers in Aviation Essay Contest

Chicago area middle and high school students were invited to celebrate Black History Month with the Chicago Airport System by writing an essay about a hero or heroine in aviation, including the Tuskegee Airmen or others who shaped aviation, and those who are making history today. Commissioner Thomas R. Walker, Department of Aviation, (pictured) joined the finalists and some of the distinguished guests during the Awards Ceremony which took place on February 20, 2002 at O'Hare International Airport. First, second and third prizes were awarded in each of four grade categories: 5th and 6th grade, 7th and 8th grade, 9th and 10th grade, 11th and 12th grade. The prizes were awarded at an Awards Ceremony on February 20, 2002 at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Listed below are the contest winners.

First Place Winners
First Prize is round trip airline tickets for a family of up to 4 people, courtesy of ATA, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines and American Airlines.

Guest speakers at the Awards Ceremony included: Chancellor Wayne Watson - City Colleges, Diana Rochon, Director of Character Education - Chicago Public Schools and Roy Chappel, President - Chicago Chapter, Tuskegee Airmen. The 5th Annual African American Pioneers in Aviation Essay Contest is sponsored by the Chicago Airport System in cooperation with The Chicago Public Schools (CPS), the CPS' Chicago Youth in Aviation Project and the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program, the Air Force Association, the Tuskegee Airmen DODO Chapter, American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, ATA, the Chicago Defender, the Federal Aviation Administration Great Lakes Region and Travel Technology Group.
