The Chicago Airport System to Sponsor 5th Annual African American Pioneers in Aviation Essay Contest in honor of Black History Month
Contest rules and submission requirements for the 5th Annual African American Pioneers in Aviation Essay Contest are now available. All entries must be received at the Chicago Department of Aviation by Thursday, January 31, 2002.
The theme for the 2002 essay contest is "Heroes of Yesterday and Today." Participating Chicago area students (in grades 5-12) are invited to write a 500 word or less essay about a hero or heroine in aviation, including the Tuskegee Airmen or other African Americans who shaped aviation, or those who are making history today, and should explain why that person is a role model. This can include all people, events and accomplishments related to African Americans in aviation.

The 5th Annual African American Pioneers in Aviation Essay Contest is sponsored by the Chicago Airport System in cooperation with The Chicago Public Schools (CPS), the CPS' Chicago Youth in Aviation Project and the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program, The Tuskegee Airmen DODO Chapter, American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, ATA and the Federal Aviation Administration Great Lakes Region.
