Chicago - October 29 -- The Midway Airport Terminal Development Program marks a new milestone with the opening of new airline gates beginning October 30, 2001. The new gates will bring spacious hold rooms and offer passengers a shorter walking distance from the new Terminal to gates. In order to transition between the new concourses and gates, all existing concourse letters have been changed.

"Midway Airport has experienced exciting changes in 2001 and there's more to come. New gates and concourse buildings will continue to open in the next several months bringing added conveniences and amenities to our travelers," said Aviation Commissioner Thomas R. Walker. "As new airline gates open, travelers will experience shorter walking distances from the Terminal to their gates."

A portion of Midway's new Concourse B opens on October 30th with airlines operating from gates B1-B3. The new Concourse C and a portion of Concourse A will open within the next several months. The lettering for the existing concourse buildings have also changed from A, B, C to F, G and H. For example, the existing Concourse A, now becomes Concourse F.

"The transition to new gates and concourses is a phased process that allows us to keep our current inventory of 29 gates operational while construction is on-going," said Deputy Commissioner Erin O'Donnell. "In the next several months, travelers will see new gates open and old gates closing."

International service from Midway Airport will be possible in early 2002 with the opening of the new Federal Inspection Facility located at the new Concourse A. Midway Airport will have a total of 41 airline gates when the Midway Airport Terminal Development Program is complete in 2004.

In 2001, the Chicago Department of Aviation opened the new Midway Airport Terminal Building, a new security checkpoint and the Midway Boulevard with 50,000 square feet dedicated to food, beverage and retail offerings.
