The Midway Terminal Development Program Continues Commitment to Community Hiring Initiative

Job Fair to Promote Potential Job Opportunities at the New Midway Airport

(CHICAGO), Tuesday, May 1, 2001 -- Today, The City of Chicago Department of Aviation will host the first Midway Job Fair at Daley College since the opening of the new Midway Terminal.

2001 marked an exciting milestone for the Midway Terminal Development Program with the opening of the new airport terminal building last month. The new terminal and concessions triangle has more than tripled the size of the old terminal, and the need for additional employees to staff these establishments has increased.

The new terminal will provide an expanded facility with enhanced services for those travelers passing through Midway, said Aviation Commissioner Thomas R. Walker. AThe Job Fair will provide an opportunity for Midway employers to seek qualified, community residents interested in working at Midway Airport, he added.

A diverse workforce, community hiring initiative was launched by the Department of Aviation in 1998 to ensure that community residents are provided with job opportunities, training and readiness programs to shape and strengthen their skills.

More than 35 Midway employers and community groups will participate. Airlines, retail establishments, car rental agencies and food service companies will be represented accepting resumes from interested candidates.

The Terminal Development Program will be completed in 2004 with the opening of the 41 gate concourses. The Program continues to make a significant impact to the region, generating 94,000 temporary and permanent jobs and will contribute nearly $4 billion in economic activity.
