Department of Aviation Announces Winners of Gallery 37 Holiday Art Competition

Winning Apprentice Artists to be Honored at O'Hare International Airport

(CHICAGO) December 8, 2000 – The City of Chicago's Department of Aviation hosts an Awards Ceremony and Reception honoring the winners and runners up for the Gallery 37 2000 Holiday Art Competition. Apprentice artist's works will be used on items such as signage, shopping bags, gift wrap, and postcards at both O'Hare and Midway Airports during the holiday season.

Six contest winners of the Gallery 37 2000 Holiday Art Competition will receive a check for $250. Four honorable mention winners will receive a $100 award. An exhibit of winning artwork will be displayed at O'Hare's Terminal 2.

The overall "Holidays in Chicago"art theme challenged the Gallery 37 students to submit interpretive artwork in media such as graphic arts, oils, charcoals, and watercolors.

"The 2000 Holiday Art Competition offers apprentice artists involved with the Gallery 37 program an opportunity to gain valuable commercial experience by creating original artwork that will be seen by millions of travelers from all over the world", said Aviation Commissioner Thomas R. Walker.

Gallery 37 provides Chicago youth between the ages of 14 to 21 with quality education and on-the-job training in the visual, literary, media, culinary and performing arts. The City of Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and the Arts Matter Foundation are responsible for coordinating Gallery 37's programs.
