(River Grove) October 30 – Today Chicago and surrounding suburban officials celebrated the completion of the 75th school to receive noise remediation improvements under the City of Chicago School Sound Insulation Program. Walker joined River Grove Mayor Thomas Tarpey, Sister Nancy Nolan, SP, President of Mother Theodore Guerin High School (pronounced Garren), Arlington Heights Mayor Arlene J. Mulder, Chair of the O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission and students in the re-dedication Mother Theodore Guerin High School.

"Since 1982, the Department of Aviation has worked with our neighboring communities at O’Hare to improve the quality of life for residents and students," said Commissioner Thomas R. Walker. "Today is a clear example of the accomplishments of the O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission and its ability to ensure that the schools and homes most impacted by aircraft noise receive noise remediation funds."

The City of Chicago’s School Sound Insulation Program is the most extensive of its kind in the country. To date, more than $181 million has been in spent in school noise remediation and 13 schools are currently in design or construction.

"We are pleased with the efforts of the City of Chicago and the O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission to effectively reduce the noise level in our school," said Sister Nancy Nolan SP, President, Mother Theodore Guerin High School. "We believe that today’s celebration reminds our students that through cooperation, their goals can be accomplished."

Sound remediation work at Mother Guerin High School cost more than $4 million and included the installation of new windows, acoustical ceilings, lighting and a new heating and cooling system.

Recently the Department and the O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission announced that seven additional schools will receive sound remediation improvements. They include: Maine East High School in Park Ridge, St. Francis Borgia in Chicago, Bethlehem Lutheran of River Grove, Lutheran School of the Holy Spirit in Elk Grove Village, Holy Cross High School in River Grove, Dever Elementary of Chicago and Queen of the Rosary in Elk Grove Village.

No local taxpayer money is used to fund home and school sound insulation work. All funding comes from the federal airport improvement program and passenger facilities charges.
