Midway Airport Residential Sound Insulation Program Receives $20 Million
(CHICAGO) December 20, 1999 – The City of Chicago Department of Aviation announced an additional $20 million for the Midway Airport Residential Sound Insulation Program. The announcement was made at a special meeting of the Midway Noise Compatibility Commission.

"The $20 million will more than double the funding of the existing program," said Chicago Aviation Commissioner Thomas R. Walker. "The additional funds increase our sound insulation commitment to $38 million and allow us to insulate an additional 600 homes," added Walker.

To date, the Midway Airport Residential Sound Insulation Program has insulated 570 homes at an average cost of $32,000 per home totaling $18 million. The $20 million will fund the program beyond the year 2000 and ensure that the approximately 600 remaining eligible homes within the 80 decibel level (DNL) are insulated.

"We will continue to work cooperatively with the Midway Noise Compatibility Commission to address quality of life issues for airport neighbors," said Aviation Commissioner Walker. "The Commission is an excellent example of the progress that can come about when we work together to achieve a common goal," he said.

The Midway Noise Compatibility Commission consists of 19 members—ten City of Chicago community representatives and one Cook County community representative as well as eight suburban mayors. The Commission seeks community involvement in determining how best to minimize the impact of aircraft noise and is a vehicle for positive change in the communities surrounding Midway.
