New Pedestrian Bridge Opens at Chicago Midway Airport
(CHICAGO) October 21, 2000 – A new Midway Airport is one step closer with the opening of the new pedestrian bridge over Cicero Avenue. The new pedestrian bridge represents the completion of the next milestone of the Midway Airport Terminal Development Program.
The new pedestrian bridge features moving sidewalks, terrazzo flooring and floor to ceiling windows. Travelers can access the new pedestrian bridge from the Midway Airport Parking Garage and Chicago Transit Authority’s Orange Line Station. From the Garage and CTA station, the entrance to the new pedestrian bridge is located on the third floor of the Parking Garage near the center elevators.
"The opening of the new pedestrian bridge brings us one step closer to a new Midway Airport. From the more spacious, modern pedestrian bridge travelers will be able to view firsthand the progress being made on the new Terminal Building and the Concourse Buildings," said Deputy Commissioner Erin O’Donnell. "Again, we thank the travelers for their patience and understanding during our construction phase. As they will see, a new Midway Airport is not far away."
From the existing Terminal Building, travelers will access the new pedestrian bridge on the east side of the terminal curbfront across from doors M8 and M9. Stairs, escalators or an elevator will take them from the curbfront to a temporary walkway, where they will walk through the new concourse B and concessions area building and over Cicero Avenue through the new pedestrian bridge.
For passenger convenience, courtesy luggage carts and a complimentary tram are available for use on the new pedestrian bridge and temporary walkway. Luggage carts can be found on all floors of the Parking Garage.
A portion of the new concourse A building will be built on the site of the existing pedestrian bridge. In order for construction to continue on the new concourse A building, the existing bridge must be demolished. The new Midway Airport Terminal Building and concessions area is expected to open in Spring 2001. When the new Terminal Building opens, travelers will enjoy modern amenities, new ticketing facilities, spacious baggage claim areas just 15 feet from the Parking Garage, and a variety of new restaurants and retail choices.
The Midway Airport Terminal Development Program has already brought significant changes to the Airport, including roadway improvements and the new Midway Airport Parking Garage, which opened in July of 1999.
