THE CHICAGO AIRPORT SYSTEM CELEBRATES PUBLIC ART AT MIDWAY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WITH AN ARTS OPEN HOUSE
American Society of Media Photographers Showcase "Good Morning Chicago"
(CHICAGO) - April 21, 2004. The Chicago Airport System today is proud to present the Midway International Airport Arts Open House. The Open House coincides with the installation of the American Society of Media Photographers (AMSP) exhibit and the completion of Public Art pieces at Midway International Airport.
"These exhibits celebrate the expressive contributions of Chicago’s local photojournalistic talents," said Aviation Commissioner John A. Roberson. "Travelers passing through Midway International Airport will have an opportunity to view these talented works that reflect Chicago’s rich and diverse communities," Roberson added.
The Open House will include refreshments and a walking tour of art throughout the airport. "Good Morning Chicago," is the title of the installation of the new photography exhibit by AMSP members. The organization invited its member photographers to head out into Chicago on a single morning to capture on film the diversity and complexity of Chicagoans and Chicago neighborhoods capturing images that challenge ways in which we view and embrace the City’s cultural identity.
Chicago Public Art celebrates the major artworks commissioned as part of the City of Chicago Public Art Program and the Midway Terminal Development Program.
- Keith Haring Mural, created when he was a visiting artist working with students at several Chicago Public Schools in 1990
- Rara Avis, a sculpture by Ralph Helmick. If you look closely, the sculpture is actually made of 2,500 small cast metal planes, linking nature and man in the impulse to fly.
- A large glass mural by Karl Wirsum, which celebrates a child's fascination with flight and the sense of freedom and adventure that it represents. Wirsum also pays homage to the Tuskegee Airmen by incorporating squadron logos on the design.
- Artist Kathleen Eaton created a series of paintings to represent Chicago neighborhoods to give viewers an appreciation of the City while providing visual information.
- A 35-foot high outdoor sculpture by Richard Hunt. The sculpture is made of brushed stainless steel and honors flight as a dynamic, wondrous defiance of nature by depicting a variety of flight forms.
The Open House will also feature a Chicago Arts and Tourism Video Presentation highlighting cultural and arts destinations around Chicago on 16 screens. All art featured in this Open House will be exhibited indefinitely at Chicago Midway International Airport.
