The Chicago Airport System's Airport Noise
Management System is a comprehensive system to provide actual measurement of the aircraft noise levels in Chicago neighborhoods and suburban communities around O'Hare and Midway. This integrated system includes many components, including a network of
permanent noise monitors that measure the noise environment and a system directly connected to the FAA's air traffic control radar that collects aircraft flight tracks. More than 5 million data points are recorded and stored by the system each day.
Feedback from our neighbors is crucial to the success of this program. The information from citizens about airport noise in neighboring communities is also entered into the system. This information is analyzed at a central computer that helps the
airport in the management of the airport noise mitigation programs. The Department of Aviation Environment Office will use this data as the basis for working with the O'Hare Noise Compatibility Commission, the Midway Noise Compatibility Commission, the
Federal Aviation Administration, air carriers and communities on future programs aimed at reducing noise impacts on residential communities.
